Allergies

I like reading blogs that give a glimpse of the person who writes it.  Of course, I enjoy their crafting bits, but also it's nice to know a little about them also.  Pen from Rosa Lily did a lovely blog a few weeks back where she listed some facts about herself and it was a fascinating read.
So I thought that now and again I would divulge some odds and ends about me - if you are not interested just skip to your next blog.
With Dave's allergy reaction going on at the moment, it made me think about the allergies I have.  I have an allergy to any form of penicillin.  I found out how severe about 5 years ago.  I had operations for cataracts and with the second op I was given some eye drops.  I did not know, but it contained 0.01% penicillin.  Yeah, I know cataracts at 55.  I think I am much older than my birth certificate says!!
On the second day of using the eye drops (1 drop twice a day) I passed out.  After phoning the surgeon and getting the drops changed he said I should consider wearing a medic alert bracelet because if I was in an accident and couldn't speak, and the hospital gave me any penicillin it would probably kill me.  LOVELY.
So now I wear this -
My other allergy is to plaster that has that yellow sticky backing, especially fabric plasters.  When I was about 14 I broke my wrist and it was strapped in this for 6 weeks.  I kept complaining it was itchy. When it was removed my arm from elbow to wrist was bright red, swollen and sore!!
The other is an allergy to sap from fir trees - how bizarre, but that's me.

Does anyone have a weird and wonderful allergy - or even a life threatening one.

  1. I always thought that I didn't suffer from allergies at all, but I've had a food related cough for ages, and only recently discovered that it was wheat that set it off, and all along I thought it was cheese and milk! So now, I guess, I must be mildly allergic to wheat, as since I've stopped eating bread I have more or less stopped coughing.

  2. Chrissy, Loving your blog - nice to have something to read about rather than simply crafting.. I have no allergies that I am aware of and I suppose at my age (52) I am unlikely to get one now tho I have had a terrific (if I can call it that?) night cough since Xmas and am under investigation if it is my HBP meds that are causing it even tho been on them for 3 years!! Not convinced it is them - feel rough too but chest clear :( BTW your allergy bracelet is quite steampunkish so you are well on trend hun!! Sheila:)X

  4. I used to love Golden Delicious apples with a glass of ice cold milk, but one day a few years back I bit into the apple and my throat swelled up and I had a problem swallowing and my lips went numb, I tried many apples since and I get the same reaction, but funnily enough I can eat cooked apples as in apple crumble and I can drink apple juice, strange eh? Such a shame as I love apples :(

  5. I found out I was allergic to the antibiotic Seprtin when I was given it by my GP for a chest infection about 15 years ago. I started coming out in what looked like blisters on my face, neck & back... They'd appear, last for about an hour, then go down & others would apprear somewhere else - wierd..!!
My son Matt gets the same reaction but with Oxytetrocyclin. I think they both have penicillin in them but we are both able to take penicillin in other forms - how does that work?

  6. My nannan was allergic to penicilin like you chrissy but mum and me always ask for penicilin based antibiotics as other ones without don't agree with us. we get sore mouths, funny tastes and split lips and sometimes stomach pains. Not sure if would totally say it was an allergy but I cant bear wool even a little bit of it makes me itch and eventually my skin goes pink with white itchy spots. I had a wool cardi as part of the uniform for a couple of years and all winter I would either freeze or have to coat my arms in talc if I had to give in and wear the cardi, even through clothes it made me itch but not as bad as on bare skin. In winter I buy coats with as little wool content as possible and try to wear something with a high neck or scarf and I still get a pink itchy neck at times.I don't like to knit with real wool as I can only manage small stretches before my fingers start itching. Also I cant take beechams flu products, I used to take hot lemon until about ten year ago when I had really bad cold/flu and I took some of that 4 in 1 beechams stuff, after drinking it I couldnt get my breath my chest tightened I got stomach cramps and I was wheezing and writhing around, after that dose even beechams hot lemons set my tummy off and my chest feals tight. Also although I love satsumas, clementines, mandarin oranges if I eat alarge normal orange now it makes my lips tingle, go red and my lips puff up a bit. My mum is even worse than me with oranges even orange lollies set her off. Aren't we humans funny eh
